Warner Brothers Plays Favorites With Microsoft
The Movies icon
There has been previous talk about the Order of the Phoenix DVD having a downloadable version included for playback on portable media players. Sorry to disappoint you, but Warner Brothers is helping out Microsoft.

The downloadable version of the movie will only play on "any device that supports Windows Media digital rights management." That excludes iPods...the biggest group of portable video players by far.

Survey #24
The Site of Requirement icon
Yeah, I know there hasn't been much going on around here since book 7 came out. Well, I'm going to try and fix that.

Harry Potter isn't "over" by a long shot, and I don't intend to close-up shop now. Vote in the survey if you want to help decide what to do next. I've also been contemplating a redesign, and re-coding some things. We'll see what happens.

JKR and Warner Brothers Sue Over Unauthorized Encyclopedia
The Books icon
J. K. Rowling and Warner Brothers are suing over an upcoming Harry Potter encyclopedia The Harry Potter Lexicon, which is slated for a November release by publisher RDR Books.

The 400-page book, authored by Steve Vander Ark of www.hp-lexicon.org has been slammed by JKR, who said

"I cannot, therefore, approve of 'companion books' or 'encyclopedias' that seek to pre-empt my definitive Potter reference book for their authors' own personal gain," she said. "The losers in such a situation would be the charities that I hope, eventually, to benefit." (Source: Reuters)

You can read more at The Leaky Cauldron, who is a partner of The HP Lexicon.

Editorial comment: This is really kind of ridiculous. Rowling has spoken highly of the HP Lexicon in the past, and the forthcoming book cannot really take away from sales of JKR's encyclopedia which, to date, not yet in progress. JKR's "official" encyclopedia would provide new information that Vander Ark's book cannot.

Philosopher's Stone First Edition Sells For Record Price
There were very few copies printed in the first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Most of them were bought by libraries, and, as you can guess, they're worth quite a lot now. I hope those libraries are keeping close watch on those first editions (put them in reference, or lock them up!) because the new record price (at auction) for a first edition is...19,700 pounds ($40,420).

The Leaky Cauldron: Harry Potter book 7, film 5 news, images, interviews, merchandise and more Visit MuggleNet.com!

Welcome! This isn't your ordinary Harry Potter website. In fact, we're anything but ordinary! Instead of focusing on Harry Potter news and categorizing every single spell, place, potion, and funny quote in the books, we concentrate on providing you with theories and speculation, The quibbler (a weblog), and a message board where you can post your theories (or theory. Unfortunately the board is short on users. You can change that, though. Just register on the forum (it's free and takes about 30 seconds). Then post some theories!

NOTE: This site is mainly about the Harry Potter books, not the movies. We do, however cover important news about the books and the movies (like the release date of the 5th movie).

You may have noticed those buttons for firefox, Adsense, and Google Pack. Fore more info about these great (and free) products, Read this list of reasons. I use Firefox and AdSense myself, and can't see how I ever lived without them (especially Firefox).

Do you need to contact us? We can be reached on the forums by posting in the correct area, or by the board's Owl Post sytem (PM system). You can send an Owl to redwall_hp. Redwall_hp can also be contacted by email by clicking here

Having trouble getting around the site? The main thing you need to understand is that it's dynamic. That means things can move change or do lots of weird things.

Take the left-hand navigation for example. The top part of it has normal links, but just down a little are some headings (like "Theories"). If you click on one of them, more links appear after it. This helps to keep the sidebar less cluttered. Click the header again and the links will disappear. Isn't that cool?

How about the news on the main page? If you click on the little "tabs" along the top of the box, you can view the news by category. Want to see only the news related to the movies? Just click on the tab marked "movies". The content of the news box will change. Clicking the all tab will show all the categories at once.

This site best viewed at 1024x768 screen resolution. JavaScript is highly recommended. Any modern browser should be fine, though I recommend Mozilla Firefox (available through the button on the right-hand sidebar).

I trust you can take it from here.
