Webmaster's Section: Web Hosting

A good host is important. After all, no one can visit your site if it's just sitting on your hard drive!

Contrary to popular belief, you can find a good web host that costs you $0.00. The now dead Avidhost was one of these. Luckily, I found a similar one (300megs). If you are a beginner, you may not need a host that advanced. Below are the best hosts I've found:

1. Awardspace - Awardspace is The Site of Requirement's current host. They have decent service. Not too many downtimes (more than I preffer, though). They have 200MB of storage, 5GB of bandwidth, up to 2 domains, up to 5 subdomains, 5 email accounts included, FTP and online filemanager, CGI, PHP and SSI, and 1 MySQL DB (I wish there were more of these). The best part? No ads!
2. EJ.AM - Ej.Am is cool. You do ten posts on their forum and you get the following with no ads: 1GB of storage, cPanel, 2.5GB of wandwidth, 5 MySQl DBs, PHP, CGI, SSI, and all the cool stuff.
3. 300megs - This webhost is the Site of Requirement top free host. It has 300MB of storage space, a decent ammount of bandwidth, a CPanel, CGI, PHP, SSI, MySQL, Fantastico, and a lot of cool and advanced stuff. The only (small) downside is you have to paste code for a small ad at the top of your page. I highly reccommend 300megs. 300megs is gone.
4. Yahoo Geocities - Geocities is an old, well-known host. As of Jan. 2006, they offer 15MB of disk space, 2.4MB hourly bandwidth, a great filemanager, browser upload, traffic stats, an odd ad scheme (odd in a good way), but no FTP.
5. Lycos Tripod - Tripod is another good host. I placed it lower than Geocities because of it's ads. Two banners at the top and one at the bottom. You get 25MB of space, decent bandwidth, traffic stats, a filemanager, CGI, etc.
6. 50webs - 50webs has 60MBs storage, unlimited bandwidth, and NO ads. You can use FTP and browser upload, but there isn't any file editor.
7. XThost - Instant sign-up (no e-mail confirmation), no ads, no editor, browser upload, FTP. Unfortunately it has cheesey word filters that may prevent you from uploading.
